Elliott Wave Theory - Keys to Investor Success
Elliott Wave Theory
- Plenty of people will freely offer you advice on how to spend or
invest your money. “Buy low and sell high,” they’ll tell you, “that’s
really all there is to it!” And while there is a core truth to the
statement, the real secret is in knowing how to spot the highs and lows,
and thus, when to do your buying and selling. Sadly, that’s the part of
the equation that most of the advice givers you’ll run across are
content to leave you in the dark about.
The reality is that no matter how many times you are told differently, there is no ‘magic bullet.’ There is no plan, no series of steps you can follow that will, with absolute certainty, bring you wealth. If you happen across anyone who says otherwise, you can rely on the fact that he or she has an agenda, and that at least part of that agenda involves convincing you to open your wallet.
In the place of a surefire way to make profits, what is there? Where can you turn, and what kinds of things should you be looking for?
The answers to those questions aren’t as glamorous sounding as the promises made by those who just want to take your money, but they are much more effective. Things like careful, meticulous research. Market trend analysis. Paying close attention to extrinsic factors that could impact whatever industry you’re planning to invest in, and of course, Elliott wave theory. If you’ve never heard of the Elliott wave, you owe it to yourself to learn more about it.
Postulated by Ralph Nelson Elliott in the late 1930’s, it is essentially a psychological approach to investing that identifies specific stimuli that large groups tend to respond to in the same way. By identifying these stimuli, it then becomes possible to predict which direction the market will likely move, and as he outlined in his book “The Wave Principle,” market prices tend to unfold in specific patterns or ‘waves.’
The fact that many of the most successful Wall Street investors and portfolio managers use this type of trend analysis in their own decision making process should be compelling evidence that you should consider doing the same. No, it’s not perfect, and it is certainly not a guarantee, but it provides a strong framework of probability that, when combined with other research and analysis, can lead to consistently good decisions, and at the end of the day, that’s what investing is all about. Consistently good decision making.
We use Elliott Wave Theory in real time by looking at the larger patterns of the SP 500 index for example. We deploy Fibonacci math analysis to prior up and down legs in the markets to determine where we are in an Elliott Wave pattern. This helps us decide if to be aggressive when the markets correct, go short the market, or to do nothing for example. It also prevents us from making panic type decisions, whether that be in chasing a hot stock too higher or selling something too low before a reversal. We also can use Elliott Wave Theory to help us determine when to be aggressive in selling or buying, on either side of a trade.
For many, its not practical to employ Elliott Wave analysis with individual stocks and trading, but it can be done with experience. We instead use a combination of big picture views like weekly charts, Wave patterns within those weekly views, and then zoom in to shorter term technical to determine ultimate timing for entry and exit. This type of big picture view coupled with micro analysis of the charts gives us more clarity and better results.
One of our favorite patterns for example is the “ABC” pattern. Partially taken from Elliott Wave Theory, we mix in a few of our own ingredients to help with timing entries and exits. This is where you have an initial massive rally or the “A” wave pattern. Say a stock like TSLA goes from $30 to $180 per share, which it did. The B wave is what you wait for and using Fibonacci analysis and Elliott Wave Theory we can calculate a good entry point on the B wave correction. TSLA dropped from $180 to about $ 120, retracing roughly 38% (Fibonacci retracement) of the rally $30 to $180. The B wave bottomed out as everyone was negative on the stock and sentiment was bearish. That is when you get long for the “C” wave. The C wave is when the stock regains momentum, good news starts to unfold, and sentiment turns bullish. We can often calculate the B wave as it relates often to the A wave amplitude. Example is the TSLA “A” wave was 150 points, so the C wave will be about the same or more.
When TSLA recently ran up to about $270 per share, we were in uber bullish “C” wave mode, and we had run up $150 (Same as the A wave) from $120 to $270. That is when you know it’s a good time to start peeling off shares. Often though, the C wave will be 150-161% of the A wave, so TSLA may not have completed it’s run just yet.

Knowing when to enter and exit a position whether your time frame is short, intermediate, or longer… can often be identified with good Elliott Wave Theory practices. Your results and your portfolio will appreciate it, just look at our ATP track record from April 1 2013 to March 3rd 2014 inclusive of all closed out swing positions. We incorporated Elliott Wave Theory into our stock picking starting last April and you can see the results:

U.S. Dollar Index ETF UUP Trading Strategy
We all know quantitative easing devalues the Dollar but contrary to
that general statement it looks as though we could see the dollar index
continue to rise for a few more weeks. If we analyze the chart of the Dollar ETF (UUP) it is clear that the
short term momentum has turned up. The break above the down trend line
and recent bounce off support bodes well for the dollar index.
The bull flag chart pattern that has formed in the past month has a measured move price target of roughly $22.30. The level also happens to be a key pivot point on the chart along with high volume resistance. I expect the dollar to continue to work its way higher over the next week or two with $22.30 being the line in the sand where sellers will jump on price and drive it back down, or at minimum force price to consolidate for a few days.

How To Position Yourself for a 10 Year Pattern Breakout
As mentioned last Friday just before things took a dive on the weekend, a look at the major market indices did not look promising. If we take an even longer term look and examine the monthly charts we can see that The S&P 500 as well as the Dow Jones have been approaching multi decade rising channel resistance lines. Further, they also appear to be forming bearish rising wedge patterns.
Monthly Long Term Chart Analysis & Thoughts....
As many of my longer term subscribers can attest to, I always preach that technical analysis is one part art and one part science: you can never be completely certain on what the outcome of a pattern is going to be. However, we can use historical analysis to make better investments. The great American Novelist Mark Twain probably said it best in that “history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes”. Regarding a rising wedge pattern, we know that roughly two thirds of the time they will break to the downside. This also means that one third of the time they break to the upside.
In accomplishing our goal of capital growth we must do a number of things. We must make returns on our investments, we must protect our investments, and we must limit our losses. While all three aspects work in tandem with each other, there are times when focus must be allocated to one specific approach.
Regarding the current technical setup, I’m not so focused on the 67% chance that these wedges will break to the downside, but more so the impact of each outcome on the average Joe’s portfolio and mom and pop businesses. The S&P 500 and the Dow are approaching long term resistance lines that have been in place for decades. If we do break to the downside, which I suspect we will, there could be a very significant sell off with consequences that no one can predict at this point though I mention some things in the chart above. Alternatively, there is significant overhead resistance in the various indices, and I don’t believe an upside break would be too monumental.
That being said, I always like to keep an open outlook and wait for the right opportunity. I’m trying to think of scenarios that would prelude further upside action and I really am not coming up with much. As evidenced by the completion of the recent 5 wave uptrend on the S&P that coincided nicely with the various quantitative easing policies, Ben Bernanke and the fed have had less and less impact. I truly can’t see many fiscal developments that would prompt any significant bullish action.
The only scenario I really think that could pump up equities is a series of positive earnings announcements. A lot of expectations, earnings numbers, guidance, etc… have been revised downwards over the last couple of quarters, so there is the opportunity for some positive surprises that could lead to some bullish price action. In absence of such a scenario, I really can’t think of much else that would prompt a run up.
Look at these charts of positive and negative earnings surprises… and the dates and remember what happened following this negative data....
Positive Earnings Surprise
Negative Earnings Surprise
That being said, I am recommending two courses of action. For those steadfast bulls, lock in some profits and/or buy some protection. Missing out on some of the upside is a lot better than losing some of the gains you have fought so hard for over the past couple of years. For the more aggressive traders and investors, start following my updates a little more regularly as I foresee many shorting opportunities coming up in the future. As many of you know, sell offs are often quick and abrupt, and timing is extremely important when playing the downside.
Further, trading could get very volatile in the near future. Historically, and even more so looking forward as August and September have been very costly for the average investor. Our focus will be in taking the highest probability trades that offer the best risk to reward scenarios. There will be times when we miss trades, and times when they’re not timed perfectly. But, as those who have been with me for a while can attest to, patience pays off in the long run....

Why Are We on High Alert for a Panic Washout Selling Day?
It’s that time of year again and I’m not talking about the holiday season...... What I am talking about is another major market correction which has been starting to unfold over the past couple weeks.
I have a much different outlook on the markets than everyone else and likely you as well. However, before you stop reading what I have to say hear me out. My outlook and opinion is based strictly on price, volume, inter market analysis, and crowd behavior and you should put some thought as to what I am saying into your current positions.
Two weeks ago I sent my big picture outlook to my subscribers, followers, and financial websites warning of a major pullback. You can take a quick look at what the charts looked like 2 weeks ago......
Since my warning we have seen the financial markets fall:
SP500 down 2.6%
Crude Oil down 4.4%
Gold down 9.6%
and Silver down 12.2%
SP500 down 2.6%
Crude Oil down 4.4%
Gold down 9.6%
and Silver down 12.2%
If you applied any leverage to these then you could double or triple these returns through the use of leveraged exchange traded funds. The amount of followers cashing in on these pullbacks has been very exciting to hear. The exciting part about trading is the fact that moves like this happen all the time so if you missed this one, don’t worry because there is another opportunity just around the corner.
While my negative view on stocks and precious metals will rub the gold and silver bugs the wrong way, I just want to point out what is unfolding so everyone sees both sides of the trade. I also would like to mention that this analysis can, and likely will change on a weekly basis as the financial markets and global economy evolves over time. The point I am trying to get across is that I am not a “Gloom and Doom” kind of guy and I don’t always favor the down side. Rather, I am a technical trader simply providing my analysis and odds for what to expect next.
Let’s take a look at some charts and dig right i........

Mid-Week Market Madness Trend Analysis Conclusion:
In short, stocks and commodities are under pressure from the rising dollar. We have already seen a sizable pullback but there may be more to come in the next few trading sessions.
Overall, the charts are starting to look very negative which the majority of traders/investors around the world are starting to notice. With any luck they will fuel the market with more selling pressure pushing positions that my subscribers and I are holding deeper into the money.
Now that the masses are starting to get nervous and are beginning to sell out of their positions, I am on high alert for a panic washout selling day. This occurs when everyone around the world panics at the same time and bails out of their long positions. Prices drop sharply, volume shoots through the roof, and my custom indicators for spotting extreme sentiment levels sends me an alert to start covering my shorts and tightening our stops.
Hold on tight as this could be a crazy few trading session........

What a week! What a month! What a quarter! Weekend Video Update
Major market trends prevailed through out the third quarter, as market after market succumbed to our Trade Triangle signals. For most market’s, the tone was a negative for the month and quarter. One shining star, was the dollar index, which was one of the very few markets that trended higher during this time frame.
As we start the final quarter of 2011, we still have that pesky little contagion problem in Europe that has never really gone away. How much that has to weigh on the markets remains to be seen.
I believe that Q4 is going to offer some exceptional trading opportunities, but these opportunities will only be available to those traders who do their homework. Before we get into looking at the markets, I wanted to share this personal note with you, here it is. On the cover of my workbook, where I write down all my various game plans for the markets I trade, it says this.
“Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it”. It sums up as to how I look at the markets. No successful trader I know, wings it, they all work hard and do their homework, and work hard at staying successful.
Let's look at our Trade Triangles and Trend Analysis for the U.S. Dollar......
Change for the week: +0.62%
Monthly Trade Triangles for Long Term Trends = Positive
Weekly Trade Triangles for Intermediate Term Trends = Positive
Daily Trade Triangles for Short Term Trends = Positive
Combined Strength of Trend Score = + 100
The December Dollar was higher overnight and poised to extend the rally off August's low. Stochastics and the RSI are overbought, diverging but are turning neutral hinting that sideways to higher prices are possible near term.
If December renews the rally off August's low, the 75% retracement level of this year's decline crossing at 80.29 is the next upside target. Closes below the 20 day moving average crossing at 77.67 are needed to confirm that a short term top has been posted.
First resistance is Monday's high crossing at 79.65. Second resistance is the 75% retracement level of this year's decline crossing at 80.29. First support is the 20 day moving average crossing at 77.67. Second support is the reaction low crossing at 76.58.

SP500, Financials and Tech Stocks Playing off of our June 19th Article
A couple weeks back on June 19th Chris Vermeulen posted an analysis on how the stock market was bottoming and that we needed a couple key sectors to participate before we would get a solid bounce. You can quickly review the charts at "Is This Market Flashing a Buy Signal or Another Market Collapse"
Today’s report plays directly off the June 19th analysis showing you the price movement from then on.
SP500 – SPY ETF Daily Chart
As you can see during early June the market became volatile with a broadening formation. This type of price action is an early warning that a trend reversal is near. It was only two days later when we saw stocks make a new high, which is the first ingredient for a trend reversal to take place. But once a higher high was made sellers quickly jumped back into the market pulling price back down. Keep in mind the higher high which was made was another early sign that a trend reversal was likely to happen.

During this time I was watching the charts like a hawk keeping a close eye on the time and sales window which I have filtered to show me only orders with a market value of $3million dollar or larger. This helps me keep a close eye on what the big money players are doing… Following their coat tails if done correctly will help keep you out of the market at times and also gets you in before the masses jump on the wagon.
The two key sectors I talked about on June 19th were the Financials and Tech. Both these sectors must move up if we are to get a decent bounce/rally in the market.
Financial Sector Daily Chart:
By zooming out on the daily chart we can see in terms of both price and volume that the financial sector was at a major support level. Also it had just fallen sharply for more than a week making it oversold and ready for a bounce.

Only a couple days later financial stocks rocketed 11% higher as expected and the broad market (SP500) posted some decent gains for us also.
Let’s take a look at the financial sector:
The tech sector was in the same boat as the financials above… Tech stocks jumped an average 6%.

Weekend Trading Conclusion:
In short, I feel the market has shown us some decent upward momentum and everything is now at the point where a pause is likely. I expect some type of pause or pullback in the coming week and then the market has a major decision to make. Will it continue and start a new leg higher or roll over and die… That’s the next key question/action about to take shape and I will help guide you through these times each day with my pre-market morning video analysis.

The $20,000 Forex "Secret Weapon"?
For the past year, one of the Forex trading community's most seasoned trading "veterans" has been working diligently in his "trading lab" trying to solve the #1 request his Forex trading students from all around the world have been asking him for:
* "How can I make MORE money in LESS time, even if I'm not a technical Forex 'geek'?"
To do this properly, he had 2 big challenges:
1. How to shorten the time needed to actively find & manage the highest probability, lowest risk trades...
2. How to give you total control to manage these trades to completion, so your portfolio is protected at all times...
After a LOT of research and testing, he's finally ready to show you what he came up with, a way to MULTIPLY your profit potential in these highly lucrative markets in 60 seconds or less of active trading, so he recorded a brand new presentation that reveals his discovery here:
The $20,000 Secret Weapon
The "secret weapon" behind his discovery is a custom piece of intelligent software that he paid over $20,000 to develop that can predict with a high level of accuracy which way any of the 6 major Forex pairs are headed in the next 8 hours...
It does all the "hard work" of finding the best trade setups, saving you hours of analysis......but then gives you total control to place and manage the trades yourself so your portfolio is always shielded from risk.
And from what I've seen, no one is trading like this (yet)...
No, it's NOT a "robot"... it's NOT an "expert advisor"... it's NOT even a "plug-in"...
It's a complete, step-by-step approach to trading that's probably unlike anything you've seen before.
He reveals it all in his new trading lab discovery presentation here:
It's awesome, and it's something anyone can do, regardless of your experience. Plus, it easily fits into your busy schedule because you really only need 60 seconds here and there throughout the day to place and manage your trades.
